In the family musical Baron 1898, young Jochem and the traveller Gustav meet at the hostel in a small village on the Zompige Heide. Gustav is on his way to his true love in a distant land and tells Jochem enthusiastically about his adventures. As he sets off, Jochem helps him cross the treacherous Zompige Heide.
A few years later, Gustav returns to the village hostel. No longer as an adventurer, but as the greedy Baron Hooghmoed. He has changed since discovering that gold lies deep within the earth of the Zompige Heide. Blinded by the glitter of the gold, everything must give way: his great love, the natural world surrounding the Zompige Heide, Jochem. Everything.
Will the baron destroy the Zompige Heide to satisfy his hunger for gold? Will Jochem realise in time that it is up to him to save his village and all the natural world around it from ruin? And who are those elusive singing figures who emerge from the mist at dusk?
